About the garden
The garden which has a strong asymmetric quality uses a series of formal, linear paths and terraces that surround a large water channel. A succession of garden rooms are delineated by three striking monolithic walls and a ‘floating’ oak bench.
A palette of natural materials including aged copper, English oak and Purbeck stone have been used to highlight their raw beauty and the focal point of the garden is a dramatic ‘energy wave’ sculpture. Crafted in copper rings, it weaves through both the large pool and planting areas. The planting has a harmonious woodland-edge quality to it with Cercidiphyllum (Candy floss trees) anchoring giant domed Ilex (Holly) and clumps of billowing perennials in a palette of soft pink, white, lilac and yellow that gently soften the formal architectural edges of the garden. Contracts Manager Darren Windiate said;
“This is our third Chelsea and despite previous experience this build threw up plenty of logistical, physical and emotional challenges!
It’s a significant achievement just to get these gardens built in the time available and so to win another gold medal really is the icing on the cake. Whatever the weather or the problem nothing but perfection is acceptable – A gold medal is the best possible recognition for a talented bunch of people who have put their hearts and souls into it. Our next big challenge will be making it up to our partners and children who haven’t seen much of us for some time!”
