A Plant Lovers Paradise

The brief

With only one client stipulation, no lawn, we set out to design and build a true plant-lover’s paradise in West Berkshire. This is a garden made for slow mornings; a place to wander with a coffee while taking in the intricate textures of the grasses and the seasonal bloom of every flower. To bring this vision to life, we gave our designers, Helen and  Elaine total creative freedom to work her magic on the scheme.

The design

This garden is a study in the balance between the structured and the organic. Helen blended ‘industrial chic’ materials like Corten steel and gabion stone with a naturalist planting scheme that bridges the gap between Prairie style and the English cottage tradition. The clean lined stone patio provides a steady anchor for the wild, layered borders, which serve to expand the horizon of the garden. The result is a space that feels much larger than it is; a series of immersive, leafy rooms designed for discovery.

Beyond its beauty, this garden is a sensory experience defined by a sense of tactile tranquillity. The heavy, grounded presence of the gabion structures and the steady rhythm of the water feature invite you to slow down. By pairing rugged, weathered steel with the soft, ethereal textures of the planting, we have created a sanctuary which perfectly balances the elements.

soft landscaping

With the client giving us a blank canvas, Elaine was free to design a vision straight from the heart. She moved away from rigid structures to embrace a ‘prairie style’ scheme, where drifts of plants prioritise rhythm and fluid movement over formality. To ensure this vision had the best possible start, every specimen was hand-picked and supplied by our trusted partners at The Big Plant Nursery in Twyford.

Wilderness within limits

There is a lovely tension between the hard edges of the landscaping and the unruly movement of the plants.

  • The tall, wispy, ornamental grasses create a sense of privacy and enclosure without the harshness of a solid wall.
  • The way the plants spill over the gravel paths makes the space feel established and natural, rather than overly manicured or sterile.
  • The honey-toned gravel and the golden hues of the dried grasses create a warm, Mediterranean inspired atmosphere.
  • The scattered pink roses and creamy – white Hydrangea paniculata in the background provide soft focal points that break up the green and tan tones, adding a touch of classic garden romance.

At the heart of the garden lies a bespoke Corten steel water feature. We positioned it specifically to create an engaging and comfortable anchor point; one that invites you to sit back and take in the textured beauty of the landscape as it unfolds before you.

Overall Effect

Our team has breathed life into a once soulless suburban plot, transforming it into a sanctuary that is as much about experience as it is about aesthetics. Gone is the empty lawn; in its place is a layered landscape of grasses and shrubs that feels wild yet curated. Whether you are seeking a moment of quiet reflection by the water or hosting a lively gathering with family, this garden is designed to be fully inhabited. It is an immersive retreat that invites you to stay a while.
