Riverside Property

the design brief

Our clients have invested in a long-term family home and wanted the garden to have different sections, with formal areas for the adults to entertain in and well as a more unstructured spaces for the children to maybe have a trampoline in and kick a ball around. A kitchen garden (above) was a must as well as an area to host friends and family.

The solution, especially in a large garden like this, lies in effective zoning and a deliberate planting schemes.

The previous owners had allowed the garden to become very overgrown with rambling, undefined paths throughout. There were very few plants in the garden so the planting scheme was very important.

award winning design

We are thrilled to announce that this project is now a BALI National Landscape Award winning garden as well as an APL Awards 2026 finalist.

planting

Our client asked for a mixture of purple, pink, white and green. The kitchen garden included a herb garden with a strong emphasis on Rosemary and Thyme.

Here are some of the plants we used to create the informal planting:

  • Agapanthus
  • Alliums
  • Euphorbia
  • Heucheras
  • Hostsas
  • Hydrangeas
  • Lavender
  • Nigella damascena
  • Roses
  • Salvias
    elements used
    • Zoning

The garden is a large, multi-zoned space, one of them being a structured kitchen garden

    challenges

The property benefits from riverside views but with this comes the challenge of parts of the garden flooding annually. Any planting here had to be able to withstand very wet conditions.

    the garden now

This is a beautiful and expansive garden, dominated by a large, well-maintained lawn that stretches down to a private mooring by the Thames. The meticulous lawn is framed by a variety of mature trees and new planting with ample space for the children to kick a ball around.

Overall it is a low-maintenance planting scheme that prioritises structure, texture, and movement over bright, continuous colour, giving it a sophisticated, contemporary feel.

The pathways that were once overgrown and undefined have been re-established and re-planted to neatly define the edge of the lawn.
